Jae Jarrell is a founding member of the art movment AfriCOBRA. Her work, Dahomey Ensemble, was executed in 1973-2021 and was inspired by influences from African cultures to create a garment that would become a symbol of 1960s and 1970s black radical culture. A replica of a woman’s full-length skirt and jacket outfit from 1973 made of leather pieces cut and set in a pattern on suede, the work goes beyond the borders of high fashion and intertwines itself with the revolutionary aesthetic principles of AfriCOBRA.
Jae Jarrell’s “Dahomey Ensemble”, also known as "Dahomey Spirit Ensemble”, was exhibited in 1973 at “AFRI-COBRA III” at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and was worn by the artist in her daily life. The complete design was refreshed as a complete ensemble for the 2018 exhibition at the Smart Museum Chicago, “The Time Is Now! Art Worlds of Chicago’s South Side 1960-1980.” “Jae Jarrell said that her "Dahomey Spirit Ensemble" was influenced by mudcloth prints. The green suede jacket is appliquéd in leather geometric shapes, which repeat in the full-length skirt. Here, she unfurls her harbinger abstract vocabulary in fashion design, with repeated designs, completing a beautiful and creative composition that is revolutionary in concept." -Wadsworth Jarrell, AFRICOBRA: Experimental Art Toward A School OF Thought, Duke University Press, 2020, p. 222
