A few years ago, while on assignment in Afar, I came across in the distance a sand tornado. It was beautiful and hypnotic in its movement. In this image I wanted to portray the distant political storms that looms in the country. This piece is expressing being a witness to the many changes taking place in Ethiopia but also questioning some of the policies.
The obelisks are symbolic of history and the strength of the empire. Teddy painted the backdrops and along the way we started incorporating the colors. The hand casts were made and painted red. These are symbolic of uprising, discontent. In her hand she holds the traditional horn that is used for ceremonies and also to announce death of a neighbor. I choose the title because we are on an inertia towards great challenges and difficulties.
